Dear Friends,
I am sure we would all agree that 2020 has not been without its unique challenges. Always remember that with great challenge comes great opportunity! We would all prefer to be in sunny Tampa, Florida enjoying the camaraderie and excitement of our 2020 ChiroCongress convention. Sadly, we all understand the realities that the pandemic has brought forth. The safety and comfort of our attendees is always the top priority at any ChiroCongress event. Also considering the current state quarantine mandates that remain, our board agreed that the best option would be to still hold our convention…just with significant social distancing this time around.
I sincerely appreciate the time and effort that our Education & Events Chair, Dr. Rachel Wendt, and her committee put in to planning this convention. As true professionals, the pivot to a virtual conference was planned for months ago if the need were to arise. This will be an amazing convention, and I sincerely look forward to the in-person events we will be holding in 2021! Tampa and Hawaii in the same year? Sign me up!
Looking back at the beginning of all of this in March, chaos reigned. It seemed that every governor was implementing a different approach to address the pandemic. There was a great deal of uncertainty and fear of the unknown. I am very proud that we were able to create our ‘COVID Roundtables’ where we could share our concerns and learn what steps we could take to help our respective state organizations and the doctors and patients we ultimately serve. We were able to take the proverbial lemons we were handed and make a tasty blackberry bourbon lemonade! This represents the very heart of who we are as an organization—we help each other in good times and in bad. With such success in managing this crisis, imagine what we will accomplish working together on our national strategic plan!
Speaking of which, the ‘Future of Chiropractic Strategic Plan Task Force’ has been working all year to lay the foundation for how our plan will be formed. Your ChiroCongress board members along with Dr. Jay Greenstein, Dr. Tom Klapp, John Murray (Wisconsin Chiropractic Association Executive Director), and Dr. Ray Foxworth have put their heart and soul into this project! Whether we move forward in-person or virtually, this plan is absolutely vital to the continued growth and success of the chiropractic profession. As I’ve said many times the past eight months, navigating a crisis is analogous to sailing a ship. There will be rocks and storms to avoid, and the winds will change direction when least expected. Our job as leaders is to adjust the sails and continue confidently to our destination!
Looking back at the past two years, I am also very proud of ChiroCongress for the goals we have achieved and the exciting new projects we have only just begun! You will hear more about these accomplishments in our virtual event, but I am especially proud of the fact that we were able to create a 501(c)3 charitable organization, ‘ChiroCongress Cares!’ I know that this vehicle will help both our organization and our profession immensely in the years ahead.
It has been my honor to serve you as President during this time. Our board is comprised of amazing individuals working together like a finely tuned engine to get the job done! I have the utmost confidence that ChiroCongress will continue to grow and take us to levels we previously only dreamed of! Saving the best for last, I cannot find the words to express my gratitude to our incredible ChiroCongress staff for all they do every day to ensure that we stay on mission! Our Executive Director, Lizz Klein, is the driving force behind everything we do as an organization. Communications Specialist, Sheri Ryan, and Events Specialist, Suzi Anderson are invaluable assets to ChiroCongress and I salute them for their professionalism!
I hope you enjoy this year’s convention, and I look forward to seeing you there virtually!

Jeff Tenenbaum is one of the nation's leading nonprofit attorneys, and is also an accomplished author, lecturer, commentator, and expert witness on nonprofit legal matters. As Managing Partner of the nationally recognized, Washington, DC-based Tenenbaum Law Group – a five-attorney boutique law firm focused exclusively on the legal needs of nonprofits – Jeff counsels his clients on the broad array of legal and sensitive business and governance issues affecting nonprofit organizations.

Jeff is the author of the ASAE-published book, Association Tax Compliance Guide, which is only slightly more popular than his second – and much more interesting – book, Quarantine Cocktails. He currently serves as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Trade and Professional Associations Subcommittee and on the ASAE Legal Advisory Council and Public Policy Committee.
Born in the remote wilds of the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, Slavko Komarnytsky is an integrative biologist who combines expertise in botanical research and technological innovation with a commitment to reverse the worldwide rise of metabolic and immune disorders. His scholarly work comprises 70 papers that set trends in biodiscovery from natural sources, including bioactive phytochemicals that interact with the bitter receptors, endocannabinoid system, and gut microbiome to improve human health and wellbeing. He is the Associate Professor of Pharmacogenomics at NC State University, and founder of the Mobile Discovery program that engages students and ethnic communities in global health research.
Will Woodlee is a partner who joined Kleinfeld, Kaplan & Becker in 2010.
Will’s practice focuses primarily on counseling and advocating on behalf of food, dietary supplement, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, medical device, tobacco, cannabis/hemp, and consumer product companies on regulatory and advertising law matters.
Will has previously served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Food and Drug Law Journal, the Food and Drug Law Institute’s (FDLI’s) Food, Dietary Supplements, and Cosmetics Committee, and the Editorial Advisory Board of FDLI’s Update magazine. He frequently writes and speaks about the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, and he served as editor for FDLI’s The Food Safety Modernization Act: A Comprehensive, Practical Guide to the Landmark Legislation. He has extensive experience with the regulation of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and other nicotine-containing products at the federal, state, and local levels. He also has extensive experience with the complex and evolving regulation of products derived from cannabis, including hemp and cannabidiol (CBD) products.
For 2015-2018, Super Lawyers named Will a “Rising Star” of the Washington, DC, metro area’s “Food & Drugs” bar. He earned his BA from Wake Forest University, graduating magna cum laude, with Honors in English, and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his JD from Wake Forest University School of Law, where he served as an Executive Editor for the Wake Forest Law Review.
Mike Klinker is Vice President and General Counsel at Standard Process, Inc., a maker of whole food based dietary supplements. Prior to that he was a corporate and transactional attorney in private practice in Milwaukee WI for 28 years.
Mr. Klinker has testified in South Africa as an expert witness in business litigation concerning unfair competition, and for more than 20 years was a contributing author to “Contract law in Wisconsin” published by the State Bar of Wisconsin.
He is a graduate of Purdue University and Northwestern University Law School.
Carol Wick has advised nonprofits and philanthropists her entire career and understands their unique challenges. First, as a therapist for abused children and later as an award-winning CEO of one of the nation’s largest domestic violence centers. She is renowned for her expertise turning around struggling organizations, using her business acumen to achieve financial stability, and her advocacy to engage the community as partners.
Utilizing this wealth of experience, Carol has spent the past decade developing a model to assist nonprofits in assessing their ability to take their organizations to the next level. Her services focus on creating dynamic fundable plans and developing outcomes the community will care about and fund.
Carol founded Sharity with the mission to empower nonprofits and other changemakers to take control of their future and their fundraising. Her team is comprised of experienced former successful CEO’s who bring decades of wisdom and experience to every project. Clients include organizations from across the globe from 4-year state universities to national advocacy groups. Sharity is a certified EDWOB.
Carol holds a bachelor's from Florida State University; Master's from Auburn University; Certificate in Board Governance from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, and a Certificate in Advanced Entrepreneurship from Rollins College Crummer School of Business.
Karen Pelot is the founder and CEO of Perspectives, a company passionate about helping clients connect vision to strategic goal achieving action. Perspectives was recently selected as HR TechOutlook magazine’s 2020 Leadership Coaching & Development Company of the Year.
Founded in 2007, Perspectives is a certified woman owned business with a successful history serving clients through mediation, consulting, and executive coaching. Clients include Fortune 100 corporations, nonprofits, government agencies, and small businesses.
Karen is a people and strategy expert, with a deep knowledge of personality, conflict, and work-style variables. She quickly understands team dynamics and individual styles. Then leans on strengths and minimizing challenges, to empower individuals and organizations to resolve conflict, overcome deficiencies, build unity and trust, develop strategy, time-bound tactical plans, and ultimately achieve their goals.
Karen’s true expertise comes from her depth of experience. Her credentials include: Master Certification in Executive and Organizational Coaching from the University of Texas; ICF Coaching certification; Supreme Court of Florida circuit civil mediator certification; MBA, MDR from Colorado Technical University; and B.S. in Communications, with minors in Business and Sociology, from Florida Southern College.
David Beurle is a world renowned strategist, futurist, researcher and practitioner. As founder and CEO of Future iQ, David is a pioneer and expert in creating new and innovative future planning approaches for use in community, regional, industry, organizational and government settings. David has pioneered the application of scenario planning within regions, industry and corporations around the world. David created the Future Game™, a global planning and workshop tool that has been used in over 600 workshops across 10 countries. Heather leads Future iQ’s research projects, most recently co-authoring The Future of Local Food Systems and Sustainable Agriculture and The Future of Urban Living. She has extensive experience in local government and the nonprofit sector and is an accomplished project manager. Heather has a well-developed ability to assimilate information into thoughtful and coherent writing. She applies the integration of future trends, data analysis and public engagement into implementable strategy development for clients. Through her work, Heather provides that critical resourceful guidance needed to empower communities and organizations to make decisions that build sustainability and resiliency as they face a future of accelerations and change. Originally from Canada, Heather has pursued her international interests through her philanthropic work with the United Nations Association of Minnesota.
Sherry McAllister, DC, M.S. (Ed) CCSP, serves as the President for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, the national not-for-profit organization showcasing the benefits of chiropractic care across multiple platforms.
Dr. McAllister earned her Master’s in Education from the University of California East Bay and is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West, where she served as an Associate Professor. She has also been appointed to the Forbes Nonprofit Council.
She is a frequent guest speaker for National conventions, Corporate Wellness Programs, as well as Business and Healthcare Alliances.
Dr. McAllister has served as a Qualified Medical Examiner, Expert Chiropractic Witness for the State of California, and has been in private practice in San Jose since 1996.
Jeff is an association executive with a passion for professional education and program management. He brings a wealth of strategic planning, individual and organizational development experience to the WSCA having worked with professional trade associations and charitable nonprofits all over the United States. Jeff holds the Certified Association Executive credential and a Masters in Applied Ethics from Arizona State University, focusing on public policy and nonprofit management. He earned his Bachelors degree in Justice Studies and Political Science from the University of Idaho and studied law at Whittier Law School. In addition to his professional pursuits, Jeff volunteers with several organizations. He is a board member and former vice president of Pasado’s Safe Haven, the largest animal rescue and sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest, and also serves as an advisor to a student group at the University of Puget Sound. Jeff lives in Tacoma with his wife, Beth.
